I started this blog to help people learn the truth about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, otherwise known as the Mormons. There are a lot of differing opinions
online about Mormons and a large number of them are misrepresentative, twisted, or just plain false. The “anti-Mormonism” movement, if you want to call it that, while really baffling and disrespectful/hurtful in a lot of ways, is also quite pervasive/wide-spread. Much of what you find online falls into this category and it isn’t correct. It does damage every day to the faith and interest-levels of good people sincerely seeking answers in their lives and in the goodness they see in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As Mormons, we believe those answers exist—things like where did we come from, why are we here, where are we going, and how do we have more peace, joy, and purpose in our lives. We know that millions of people all over the world are searching for those answers even as we speak. And we believe we have them.
Hi there. My name is Patrick Laing. I’m 49 years old, a Mormon, and have experienced life both in and out of the Mormon Church. I’m a convert to the Church, an active member, and I really love the Church and all it stands for. I served a full-time two-year mission for the Church (in Rome, Naples, Pescara, Ravenna, Cagliari, and Avellino, Italy—all part of the Italy Rome Mission). I also taught at the MTC (the church’s Missionary Training Center) for three years in Provo, Utah. Over the past many, many years I have taught everything from Gospel Principles to Gospel Doctrine to Temple Preparation classes as part of my volunteer efforts at church.
I’m very familiar with the beliefs of the Mormon Church, the Mormon canon of scripture (The Book of Mormon, etc.), and have had many a doctrinal discussion with many a person. In short, I feel like I understand Mormonism inside and out and have a very strong testimony thereof; I also have a knack for explaining things and answering questions in a way that helps people out. I feel that I can discuss and debate it with the very best (though I tend to shy away from any sort of quarrels or negativity, and I don’t want this forum to be about contention or “who’s right or wrong”; there’s plenty of that cacophony elsewhere if you really want to find it. Me? I find it exhausting….).
As it stands, The Mormon Church and our way of life is something that a lot of people are intrigued by and attracted to. They sincerely want to know more about us and what we believe, ofttimes because they too want the peace and joy they see in the lives of so many of our members. Others are interested in us insincerely because they want to bash our faith for whatever reason (we all know that good in the world has almost always met with opposition; it’s been that way all throughout history). For either reason, Mormonism has always been intriguing.
Personally, I started my blog to try to help “balance the scales,” if you will, and give those sincerely searching for answers a believer’s perspective … an insider’s viewpoint … of the “Mormon Experience” and everything we think and do and feel. The Church and all it stands for is helping millions of people all over the world find lasting happiness … and hope. But why is that? This blog seeks to answer that question and others.
Unfortunately, there are a few folks out there who just couldn’t cut it in the Church, who have decided it took too much work or they couldn’t live up to the standards we try to live by or who maybe got offended or upset for some reason. Some of these have chosen to fight against the Church. Others have just drifted away and are silent in their struggles and regrets. A few out there are ignorant or just plain mean and they go to a lot of effort to tear us down, even though to do so isn’t Christlike, fair/right, or very mature. There are others who are just struggling, as I said, and maybe questioning their belief or working through a crisis of faith or a personal turmoil for whatever reason that might be. It happens; it’s okay. It happens to the best of us … but you are not alone. This blog is for you as well. Most of us need a little support at times in our lives.
In short, whether you’re searching for the truth about us, maybe you’re looking for answers because you’re feeling confused or concerned or downtrodden by something misrepresentative you’ve seen online or been told by others, or if you’re sincerely trying to wade through all the “noise” and “tumult” that twists the truth and isn’t really fair to the sincere investigator online, this blog can hopefully help. Ultimately, I just thought that someone should share what Mormons really believe, and why. I hope that this blog can help accomplish that. I hope that it helps you, wherever you’re at.
I hope you’ll keep reading. I try to post DAILY so, especially in time, there should be a lot of good content to choose from. Some of it I’ll write. Others I’ll just “curate.” Consider this a collection of “All Things Mormon”—the people, the perspectives, the beliefs. The works. I hope it means to you as much as it does to me but, either way … I do hope it answers a few questions for you.
Please click to Follow and you’ll get daily reminders of my newest posts if you do. And, feel free to reach out to me anytime with any personal questions. I’m here to help if I can and appreciate your Comments, Likes, Shares, and Thoughts!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you back again soon.
